The International Society for Gesture Studies (ISGS) announces its first summer school: Handling gesture: Theory and Method in Gesture Studies, to be held July 19-24, 2010, in Frankfurt an der Oder (near Berlin), Germany.

This is the first summer school of the International Society for Gesture studies funded by the Volkswagen Foundation (Germany). The summer school will provide a basic introduction to the study of hand gestures from a socio-cultural, interactional and psychological point of view. The school will comprise lectures, seminars, hands on data sessions, and technical presentations. All seminars will be taught in English by an international faculty featuring recognized academic experts in the fields. The students will have the opportunity to met and work with leading scholars in the field. The major goal is to provide a basic introduction to theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of gestures. The school will provide a platform for students and researchers embarking upon the study of gesture to discuss specific research questions and methodological concerns within their projects.

Participation is based on successful application. There are 30 stipends available covering travel and lodging costs. For information on how to apply see below.

FORMATS

The school will consist of

  • Lectures (introductory lectures to the theoretical foundation of gesture in the fields of developmental psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology, conversation analysis, linguistic anthropology, ethology and multimodal communication)
  • Seminars (methodological sessions about data collection, data coding and annotation, analysis)
  • Data sessions (hands on data sessions, discussing formal and functional aspects as well as coding and annotations)
  • Technical sessions (Camera use, Digitization, Annotation Tool ELAN)

STIPENDS

The school is open to students and researchers from any background, who are planning or have recently started a project dedicated to or including gesture as a major component. Participation is limited to successful applicants. There are 30 stipends available for the participation covering travel and lodging expenses. The submissions will be evaluated by the ISGS executive board acting as the scientific committee and selected trainees will be funded.
