ISGS Hubs

To empower gesture researchers to build local communities and to strengthen ISGS by spreading gesture research around the globe, we have begun to support “ISGS hubs” in different regions.

Look out for events, workshops and conferences and get into contact with the hub members close to you.

  • ISGS Hub Hongkong

The ISGS – Hong Kong was established in 2019 to recognise the growing footprint of gesture research in this part of the world. The goal of our ISGS Hub is to bring together academics interested in gesture studies both in HK and from the wider region to build specialised knowledge and collaborations.

The ISGS-HK was founded by Wing Chee So, Wai-lan Gladys Tang, Renia Lopez-Ozieblo and Simon Harrison.

For more information, announcements, and publications see the website of the hub.

You can also follow ISGS-HK on Twitter @GestureHK and Instagram @gesturesocietyHK.

  • ISGS Hub France

ISGS France was created in January 2020 and brings together French and/or French-speaking scholars, who are interested in Gesture Studies in many different research fields — linguistics, didactics, psychology, sociology, ethnology, computer science — and whose research area varies from interactional linguistics, pathology, didactics, first and second language learning, to human-machine communication. Bringing together the diversity of our interests is the best way to promote our research and share our knowledge and expertise with the younger generation as well as the wider scientific community of the ISGS (International Society for Gesture Studies).

For more information, announcements, and publications see the website of the hub.

Policy on ISGS support for Hubs, 2025

To help promote the international hubs of the International Society for Gesture Studies (ISGS), the ISGS can offer between 250-500 USD annually to support all recognized ISGS hubs to assist with small-scale expenses such as speaker honoraria, refreshments, venue costs, or promotional materials. The specific sum available each year is tied to budget availability. A maximum of 2% of the ISGS budget can be allocated to this support.

To request funding, ISGS hubs must submit a brief proposal outlining the event, purpose, and estimated budget at least two weeks in advance. Hub members requesting support must be dues-paying members in the broader international society. All requests are subject to approval by the ISGS Executive Board. Priority will be given to events and activities that advance gesture research in areas where it has limited visibility or presence.

No international money transfers can be made, such that the ISGS can only fund costs that are payable by credit card or alternative services (e.g. Paypal, Venmo, etc.).

Funds may be disbursed in one or multiple installments, not exceeding the annual cap. Within 30 days of receiving funds, hubs must submit a short report with receipts detailing how the funds were used.

This policy ensures equitable and transparent support for ISGS hub activities aligned with the Society’s mission.
